2013 Michigan Technology Job Trends

Blog Posts

Online Tech is contributing to Michigan’s economic growth as we endeavor to grow our Michigan employee base by 25 percent in 2013. Tech jobs in Michigan are on the rise, but are we up to the challenge?

AnnArbor.com recently reported a disparity in the increasing high-tech manufacturing positions available and the lack of qualified local graduates to fulfill them, prompting a recent state initiative, the Michigan Advanced Technician Training Program, to provide a work-study program in partnership with local auto firms.

According to Online Tech’s Director of Human Resources & Administration, Deb Webster, “even in Michigan’s slowly-recovering economy, top candidates can be challenging to find, particularly in technology fields related to our work.”

Michigan’s high-tech job growth rate places the state at 6.9 percent, ahead of the national 2.6 percent average and firmly in third place over other states. When asked about the trends in local candidates, Webster said: “I’m encouraged by recent trends yielding increasing numbers of qualified candidates with the skills and experience we need, particularly candidates who are in our geographic areas (primarily in and around Ann Arbor and Flint), as well as out-of-state candidates from Michigan who are looking to return to their home state. I think that part of this latter trend may be candidates’ positive responses to Pure Michigan’s MichAGAIN initiative to bring talent back to the state.”

According to MITalent.org, the MichAGAIN campaign encourages talented candidates with Michigan ties to stay, return, and/or invest in their state. Through partnerships with universities, businesses, and economic development partners around Michigan, the initiative aims to reach out to both young and seasoned professionals to promote opportunities to come back home.

To assist in attracting and growing local talent, Online Tech’s plans to expand across the Midwest means we are hiring for several new positions in technical, sales, and administration.

As Webster said of finding technical candidates, “We’re always on the lookout for strong IT talent, particularly people who have worked in a data center environment, when we can find that specific type of experience. One of the key challenges for hiring data center team members includes the trick of finding the right mix of technical skills, customer service orientation, and good people skills.”
