What Are DRaaS Solutions?

DRaaS, short for Disaster Recovery as a Service, provides a cloud-based way to protect and recover business systems after a disruptive event. By replicating and hosting data, infrastructure, and applications off-site, these services make it possible to restore critical operations quickly without needing traditional, hardware-heavy setups. Organizations use DRaaS solutions to reduce downtime, preserve data integrity, and maintain business continuity, all while meeting their recovery point (RPO) and recovery time objectives (RTO).

  1. The global interest in DRaaS solutions has surged. The market hit $11.5 billion in 2022 and is projected to grow to $82.8 billion by 2032. A 22% CAGR tells you that more businesses are moving their recovery strategies to the cloud for speed, flexibility, and peace of mind.
The process begins with continuous or scheduled data replication. Systems and workloads, whether physical, virtual, or hybrid, are copied to a secondary environment managed by the DRaaS provider. If your main environment goes down, failover begins. That means your operations are temporarily shifted to the provider’s recovery infrastructure. Once your systems stabilize, failback returns control to your primary site.
Key technologies make this process efficient and reliable. Continuous data protection (CDP), for example, tracks every change in real time, enabling recovery points just seconds apart. Many platforms also allow non-disruptive testing, so teams can practice their recovery plan without interrupting production environments. These capabilities are crucial for validating that the plan works before you need it.

  2. Not every business has the same comfort level when it comes to disaster recovery. Some have full-time IT teams ready to handle anything. Others need help staying afloat when things go sideways. That’s why DRaaS solutions aren’t one-size-fits-all. You will usually see them offered in three tiers: self-service, assisted, and fully managed.

    Self-Service DRaaS

This model gives you the platform and the tools, but the rest is on you. Your team handles the following:

    • Sets up the environment
    • Runs the tests
    • Monitors the dashboards
    • Performs recovery if something breaks

Self-service is great if you have the right expertise and time. But if key staff leave or priorities shift, that plan can fall apart fast. There is no backup for your backup.

    Assisted DRaaS

Think of this as a middle ground. You manage most of the environment, but the provider steps in for planning support or during critical events. This collaborative model gives you more freedom without leaving you entirely on your own.

    Fully Managed DRaaS

With this option, the provider handles everything, including the initial design, real-time monitoring, testing, failover, and failback. Fully managed DRaaS is ideal for organizations that don’t have the time or expertise to manage recovery internally or that can’t afford any guesswork when systems go down.

At OTAVA, we specialize in fully managed DRaaS solutions that match your recovery needs and risk profile. We tailor SLAs, segment your workloads by criticality, and help you plan around realistic RTO and RPO thresholds. With tools like Zerto, VMware, and Veeam, we support even the most complex environments, and we do it in a way that makes the process feel manageable.

  3. Disruption happens all the time. What has changed is how businesses prepare for it. DRaaS solutions are not just a backup plan. For many, they are a core part of a security and resilience strategy.

    Here is why:

    • Ransomware Protection: In 2023, a $75 million ransom was paid to the Dark Angels group, reportedly the largest known payment in history. These events underscore the value of being able to quickly restore systems without paying a dime. DRaaS offers immutable, off-site recovery points that ransomware can’t touch.
    • Compliance and Data Integrity: Industries like healthcare and finance must follow strict data protection standards. DRaaS helps meet those rules by enforcing encryption, documenting every change, and maintaining audit-friendly records of each recovery action.
    • Cost Predictability: With traditional disaster recovery, you often pay for duplicate infrastructure that might sit idle. DRaaS solutions replace that with a monthly or usage-based model, so you only pay for what you use.
    • Simplified Management: Managing recovery across multiple systems, tools, and vendors is no small feat. DRaaS reduces that complexity by centralizing the process, often through a single interface.

Instead of spending hours rebuilding servers or restoring tapes, teams using DRaaS can focus on keeping customers informed, working with regulators, and making smart decisions in the moment.

  4. Understanding what DRaaS solutions offer becomes easier when you compare them to more familiar terms like traditional disaster recovery or backup-as-a-service (BaaS).

    DRaaS vs. Traditional DR

Traditional recovery often relies on a duplicate data center located in a different region. That means upfront investment in physical space, cooling, power, servers, and staff. It also means longer lead times for provisioning and testing. With DRaaS, you eliminate those capital expenses and replace them with a service that activates on demand without building a second IT environment.
Restoration is also faster. Traditional DR may take hours or even days to fully restore operations. DRaaS platforms, especially those with real-time replication, can recover environments in minutes.

    DRaaS vs. BaaS

BaaS focuses solely on preserving data. It is useful for restoring files or ensuring long-term data retention, but it does not restore entire systems or environments. DRaaS covers infrastructure, networks, and apps, everything you need to keep operating after a failure.
Therefore, while BaaS may work well for non-critical systems or archival needs, DRaaS solutions are designed for full operational recovery.

  5. At OTAVA, we take a hands-on, guided approach to building out DRaaS solutions. It starts with understanding your environment:

    • What workloads are critical?
    • What compliance standards do you follow?
    • What is your tolerance for downtime or data loss?

From there, we help you design a recovery plan that is realistic and fully documented. Our S.E.C.U.R.E.™ Framework makes this easier by aligning every decision, such as platform selection, testing frequency, and failover sequence, with your goals and risks.

Our services are cloud-optimized and compliant with key regulations like PCI, SOX, and HIPAA. That means encryption is standard, audit trails are available, and access is tightly controlled. You can recover workloads into OTAVA’s secure private cloud or your preferred public cloud platform.

One of our clients, KCG, transitioned from a high-risk legacy environment to our managed DRaaS solution. They now enjoy 99.999% uptime and faster, simpler audits. Even better, they no longer scramble when a disruption happens. Their plan is tested, practiced, and trusted by every stakeholder.

We also make visibility a priority. Real-time dashboards, monitoring alerts, and non-disruptive testing are all part of the experience. You’ll never have to guess if your recovery strategy is up to date.

  6. When something goes wrong, be it a cyberattack, hardware failure, or natural disaster, the goal is to recover with minimal friction, minimal loss, and full confidence that your business will keep going.

That’s what we help you build at OTAVA. Our team works alongside yours to map out risks, select tools that fit your environment, and develop a plan that matches your industry requirements. You won’t be handed a platform and left to figure it out. You will work with real people who know your business and share your goals.
