Online Tech Adds Director of Infrastructure and Enterprise Architect to Maintain Strict Culture of Compliance as Infrastructure Grows

Press & News

Two recent additions to the Online Tech staff underscore that goal. Nicholas Lumsden was hired as the Ann Arbor, Michigan-based data hosting company’s Director of Infrastructure and Judson Pitt joined the team as an Enterprise Architect. Both have extensive experience in the healthcare IT field and bring an expert understanding of HIPAA compliance to Online Tech’s range of hosting options.

Lumsden was previously the principal technical architect at Inovalon, a healthcare data analytics company based in the Washington DC area. The Michigan native was one of the Nick Lumsden Director of Infrastructure, Online Tech
company’s first 100 employees and was responsible for scaling its infrastructure – and protecting hundreds of terabytes worth of sensitive patient information – as it grew to a nearly 5,000-employee organization over a seven-year period.

“From a HIPAA standpoint, I understand quite well what it takes to protect patient data,” Lumsden said. “You have to balance concerns like availability, reliability and performance against securing that information. Security is paramount. The worst thing that can happen in the healthcare space is that information gets in the hands of somebody malicious.”

Along with his experience securing protected health information (PHI), overseeing the triple-digit yearly growth of the Inovalon infrastructure made him an ideal addition for Online Tech. He is responsible for everything within the company’s four Midwest data centers from the generators to the cooling systems to the server infrastructures to the individual racks.

At Online Tech, that includes the encrypted, enterprise-class cloud that recently received new architecture to keep the compliant data center operator at the forefront of safe and secure data hosting. Encryption-at-rest comes automatically with every Online Tech managed cloud, from a single cloud server to complete enterprise cloud infrastructures. Additional security services provide defense-in-depth and encryption-in-transit.

“Online Tech is a growing company, and I’ve experienced that growth and am excited to put that experience to practice here,” Lumsden said. “I have a deep entrepreneurial spirit. I love the small company growing and turning it into something big, something phenomenal.”

For Judson Pitt, the move to Online Tech was a familiar one. While Pitt was the Chief Information Officer at Biotronic NeuroNetwork, he formed a business agreement with Online Judson Pitt Enterprise Architect, Online Tech
Tech to help build a HIPAA-compliant cloud based on the government’s demand to follow security guidelines. Pitt said that, at the time, “HIPAA compliance and cloud computing mixed like oil and vinegar.”

Pitt found what he needed from Online Tech as a service provider years ago, and now helps create those same systems for current and future Online Tech clients.

After Biotronic, Pitt was the Director of Information Technology at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, extending a healthcare-focused career that includes seven years in various roles at ProMedica Health Systems. His previous positions provided experience on the technical, managerial and implementation sides of the healthcare IT field. Pitt says he knows there are healthcare CIOs out there now, struggling to make the right decisions in the face of compelling evidence that they need to make an investment in cloud computing.

“I’ve been through it, can easily speak to it and understand which systems to put in place,” Pitt said. “I’ve been in those shoes and can make the best recommendation. Online Tech is doing things no other data hosting company is doing, and doing it in a way that no other company can keep up with.”

Online Tech offers multi-tenant, private and enterprise cloud services that have been audited to meet HIPAA, PCI and SOX compliance standards to ensure sensitive data stays secure while abiding by corporate data security regulations and laws. Every Online Tech cloud uses high-performance EMC VMAX SANs to encrypt data at rest, with no impact on cloud performance.
