About the Client
This California-based managed service provider (MSP) delivers IT infrastructure services to customers with evolving technology requirements. With a lean team supporting changing customer and workload demands, the organization needed an infrastructure model that could adapt as it modernized its environment and optimized resources.
The Challenge
The MSP was evaluating its existing VMware relationship as it upgraded its infrastructure and optimized its core footprint. It needed a long-term VCF partner with a service model that could accommodate changing infrastructure requirements without forcing the business into a one-size-fits-all approach.
Key challenges included:
- Evolving core requirements: Infrastructure upgrades and host consolidation meant VMware core requirements could change as the environment became more efficient.
- Need for greater flexibility: The MSP needed a service model that could better align with changing infrastructure and workload requirements.
- Customer-owned infrastructure: The organization wanted to continue using its own hosts while maintaining the ability to modernize its underlying environment.
- Scalability: As customer and workload requirements changed, the MSP needed an infrastructure strategy capable of adapting alongside its business.
- Long-term partnership: The organization needed more than access to VMware technology. It wanted an experienced partner that understood the MSP model and could provide ongoing expertise and support.
The Solution
As an authorized Broadcom Pinnacle Partner, OTAVA worked closely with the MSP to deliver a tailored VCF private cloud service built around its existing infrastructure and evolving requirements.
Through OTAVA’s VMware Cloud Foundation as a Service (VCFaaS) model, the MSP could continue using its own hosts while OTAVA provided VCF licensing and ongoing support as part of the private cloud service.
The engagement focused on:
- VCFaaS private cloud: Delivered a private cloud service supporting approximately 600 VCF cores across the customer’s infrastructure.
- Customer-owned hosts: Incorporated the MSP’s hosts into the service while allowing the organization to continue modernizing its underlying infrastructure.
- Tailored service model: Structured the engagement around the MSP’s infrastructure and business requirements rather than applying a standardized approach.
- Infrastructure optimization support: Worked alongside the MSP as it evaluated its core requirements and replaced older hosts with newer, more efficient systems.
The Results
By partnering with OTAVA, the MSP gained a VCFaaS private cloud model better aligned with its changing infrastructure requirements while maintaining its existing hardware strategy.
- Greater VMware flexibility: Established a VCFaaS model better aligned with the MSP’s evolving infrastructure and business requirements.
- Supported ongoing modernization: The MSP could continue replacing older hosts with more efficient systems while optimizing its core footprint.
- Maintained existing infrastructure investments: Customer-owned hosts remained part of the strategy while the MSP continued modernizing its environment.
- Established a long-term VCF partner: The MSP gained ongoing expertise and support from a partner that understood the flexibility required by its business model.
By combining the MSP’s existing infrastructure with OTAVA’s VCFaaS private cloud and ongoing support, OTAVA helped the MSP establish a more flexible private cloud strategy designed to evolve alongside its infrastructure and business requirements.
