What Is the Difference Between Incremental and Differential Backup?

The key difference between incremental and differential backup lies in the reference point each method uses. An incremental backup saves only what has changed since the last backup of any type, keeping each job small and fast. A differential backup saves everything changed since the last full backup, growing larger with each run but simplifying recovery. The right choice depends on your backup window, storage budget, recovery time objective, and IT team’s capacity.

  1. With incremental backups, Monday’s job captures only what changed since Sunday. Tuesday’s job captures only what changed since Monday. Wednesday’s job captures only what changed since Tuesday. Each day’s backup is its own small slice of new data.

    With differential backups, Monday’s job captures all changes since Sunday. Tuesday’s job captures all changes since Sunday, including Monday’s. Wednesday’s job captures everything since Sunday again. The reference point never shifts until the next full backup runs.

    These are typical patterns, not guaranteed figures. Actual results depend on data change rate, compression, deduplication, storage performance, and the backup software you’re using.

  2. Incremental jobs tend to finish faster because each run copies only the data that changed since the previous backup, whatever type that backup was. That keeps individual jobs small and limits how much data must move across the network. This makes incremental backups especially well-suited to frequent backup schedules, tight backup windows, and cloud environments where storage costs add up quickly.

    Differential jobs work differently. Monday’s differential might be small. By Friday, though, it could contain nearly a full week of cumulative changes. Microsoft points out that a differential backup can eventually approach the size of the full backup it’s based on, which undercuts the speed and storage advantage it had at the start of the cycle. The only way to reset that baseline is to run another full backup.

    This growth pattern matters most in environments where storage is metered or where bandwidth between sites is limited. In those situations, differential backups can become expensive to run consistently.

  3. Differential recovery has a well-earned reputation for being straightforward. You need two things: the most recent full backup and the most recent differential. Microsoft recommends restoring the full backup first, then applying the differential. That’s the entire chain; fewer files to locate, fewer dependencies to manage, more predictable restore times.

    Incremental recovery is more involved under a conventional model. You need the full backup and every incremental in the chain leading to your target restore point. A single missing or corrupted link can make every later point in that chain unrecoverable. According to Veeam’s documentation, removing a full backup or an earlier incremental can break all the dependent restore points that came after it.

    That said, calling incremental restores categorically slow would be misleading. Modern backup platforms often automate chain assembly, create synthetic full backups from existing repository data, or present each recovery point as though it were a standalone full backup. Incremental-forever systems, when managed well, can deliver a restore experience that’s effectively indistinguishable from restoring a full backup.

  4. There’s no universal answer here. The better fit depends on what your environment looks like.

    Incremental may be the better choice when:

    • Backups run hourly or multiple times a day
    • Cloud storage costs need to stay controlled
    • Network bandwidth is limited; remote offices, edge sites, hybrid cloud workloads
    • Your backup platform handles chain validation and synthetic fulls automatically
    • You need a low recovery point objective

    Differential may be the better choice when:

    • Restore simplicity matters more than keeping storage lean
    • Your dataset has a moderate rate of change
    • Full backups can run on a reliable schedule
    • Your recovery team wants fewer backup sets to manage during a restore

    Hybrid strategies are often the most practical approach. Many organizations don’t pick one method and stick with it indefinitely. A realistic schedule might combine periodic full backups, daily incrementals, synthetic fulls built from existing repository data, and separate retention schedules for short- and long-term recovery points. 

    Synthetic fulls assemble a new restore point from what’s already in the backup repository without reading the entire production dataset again, which reduces load on both production systems and the network.

  5. Choosing between incremental and differential backups is part of a larger question: Does your backup strategy work when you need it?

    The data suggests a real gap between confidence and results. Veeam’s 2026 Data Trust and Resilience Report, based on more than 900 senior IT, security, and risk leaders, found that 90% were confident they could recover from a cyber incident. But only 28% of ransomware victims fully recovered all affected data. On average, organizations recovered 72% of affected data after a ransomware incident.

    Downtime carries serious financial consequences regardless of cause. Uptime Institute’s Annual Outage Analysis 2026 found that 57% of respondents said their most recent major outage cost more than $100,000. One in five put the figure above $1 million. IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach Report 2025 placed the global average breach cost at approximately $4.4 million, with IBM recommending regular testing of backups and incident response plans as part of any resilience program.
