RTO vs. RPO Explained for Private Cloud Disaster Recovery
Two numbers shape any recovery plan. The Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is your downtime tolerance: how long a system can be offline before the impact becomes unacceptable. The Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is your data-loss tolerance: how much data you can afford to lose.
For example, if an application has a one-hour RTO, your plan must bring it back within an hour, which may mean automated failover or warm standby capacity. If it has a 15-minute RPO, your backups or replication must run often enough that no more than 15 minutes of data is ever at risk.
